World, the digital identity project of Openai CEO Sam Altman, previously known as Worldcoin, faces challenges in Indonesia after local regulators temporarily suspend their registration certificates.

Indonesia’s Ministry of Communications (Komdigi) has suspended the Global ID Electronic Systems Operator Certificate Registration (TDPSE) on suspicious activity and suspected violations of registration, the ministry announced on May 4th.

After the suspension, Comdigi said it plans to summon local subsidiaries around the world, Pt Terang Bulan Abadi and Pt Sandina Abadi Nusantara, making it clear to them the alleged violations.

Preliminary research suggests that Pt Terang Bulan Abadi around the world was operating without TDPSE, while Pt Sandina Abadi Nusantara (where the world of its subsidiaries provided its services) is said to be involved in legal misconceptions.

Indonesian law requires registration by all digital service providers

In a statement, Komdigi emphasized that all digital service providers in Indonesia must receive their electronic registration in accordance with local laws.

Furthermore, the authorities noted that using the registration of another entity is considered a major violation of Indonesia’s digital operational law.

“The WorldCoin service will be recorded using TDPSE under the name of another corporation, namely Pt Sandina Abadi Nusantara,” said Alexander Sabar, director of digital supervision for Komdigi, in the announcement, adding:

“Breaking the registration obligation and using the identity of another corporation to perform digital services is a serious violation.”

Community action is needed

According to Sabar, the global suspension in Indonesia is a measure taken to prevent potential risks to the community.

He said the Ministry of Digital is committed to ensuring the security of the National Digital Space, with a commitment to fair and strict oversight of the digital ecosystem.

Sabbah said proper supervision would require active participation from the community. “We invite our citizens to help us maintain a safe, reliable digital space for all our citizens,” he said. “Komdigi is also continuing to be vigilant against fraudulent digital services and pleading with the public to immediately report suspicious violations through official public complaint channels.”

The community’s response is split over actions made by Komdigi.

“Good job in Indonesia – at least someone is fighting that scam,” wrote one Reddit user.

Others fought back by suggesting potential benefits from global offerings to the general public in Indonesia.

“If giving up on iris biometrics means you can feed your loved one for weeks, it may be worth the trade. Ultimately, it all depends on what’s most important to you,” another redditor said.

The latest global news from Indonesia follows the global debut in the US in May 2025, with the platform first deploying digital identity technology in six cities.

Many global regulators have been promoting global activities since their launch in July 2023. Governments such as Germany, Kenya and Brazil have expressed concern about the potential risks to the security of biometric data users pass on.
