One of 2024’s most notable Web3 game projects, Notcoin said the Tap-To-Earn genre is “probably dead” as Web3 games shift towards more fun and engaging projects.
At Token2049 in Dubai, we talked with Notcoin co-founders Sasha and Vladimir Plotvinov and Uliana Salo, head of design and product lead at NotGames, about the state of Cointelegraph and Telegram-based Web3 games.
Vladimir told CointeLegraph that game builders are moving into different genres as tap-to-yearn couldn’t maintain the player’s interests.
“The tap-to-year game is probably not sustainable, so it’s probably dead, so I’m going to see different kinds of games,” he said.
Gamers want “fun times” with friends
In 2024, Notcoin was one of Telegram’s most popular tap-to-year games, with over 30 million users within three months of its release. In a previous interview, Sasha attributed the game’s growth to the ability of onboarding Telegram users to “solve problems.”
Telegram games exploded in 2024, but gamers quickly became game hopping, and as soon as they “climbed” what one project could do, they moved to other games. Sasha told the Cointelegraph:
“The users who come to the farm – their motivation is to get something. And in the game, I want to play with friends and in the group, like I enjoy.”
He added that Telegram’s first game wave did not provide that social element, but Web3 can play an important role in the platform’s gaming ecosystem.
He told Cointelegraph that Telegram Games has begun to move towards a model that simply moves away from “farming” tokens. In these new experiences, the Web3 economy portion becomes “add-ons” instead of the main value proposition.
However, development may take some time. Sasha told Cointelegraph that Telegram doesn’t have a “real game” yet, but she’s optimistic about the future.
How Artificial Intelligence Improving Web3 Game Development
Vladimir told Cointelegraph that artificial intelligence and telegrams made it easier for Web3 developers to create games.
Notcoin’s co-founder said the advent of AI technology allows developers to be faster and more efficient when writing game code.
“It saves time. Delivers faster. Write code faster than usual to save time with other simple tasks.”
However, he urged developers to be careful when using AI when creating projects.
“We need to take a lot of attention, expertise and experience, as we need to see how the API works, how it connects to each other, and how it works under heavy loads with many users,” says Vladimir.

Telegram Web3 Games Grow Exponentially
When asked if Telegram’s Web3 gaming industry would grow despite Tap to Earn’s death, Salo told Cointelegraph that Telegram has a similar market to Facebook and Wechat, a platform with its own gaming ecosystem.
“We believe in opportunities as we already have similar platforms like Wechat and Facebook that already have a gaming ecosystem. It’s a huge market. The number of users is virtually the same,” she said.
Salo said Telegram’s gaming scene currently lacks capital from major publishers and investors, but he hopes for exponential growth.
Saro added that they are trying to reach the point where they play because gamers are not only fun, but they also get to the point where they play. “We’re trying to get this extra part of what people do not just for the money, but for themselves, just like this ‘fun’,” Saro said.
